Steve Burks: Music

Breathing

(Steve Burks)
October 19, 2019
Produced, written, arranged, composed, and performed by Steve Burks
I wrote "Breathing" some years ago, when I was going through a very rough time in my life. The process was cathartic (that's the way I use music quite often). Since struggling is a common human experience, I thought I would share the song, in case it might help someone else. It's not for everybody (which is true of my music in general), but it's for whomever it's for. I hope you dig it.
If it were up to me I’d be long gone
Funeral performer, singing that song
Sing that song, sing your song
I know my thinking’s all wrong
But my foundation’s caving in
I guess my enemy was made to win
So throw the towel in, give it all up
Call it a life and pack it ALL in the truck

Frustration’s my middle name
I feel I’m going insane
Frustration’s my middle name
I feel I’m going insane

Feeling in my heart I can’t take no more
Anybody know what I’m breathing for?
Feeling in my heart I can’t take no more
Anybody know what I’m breathing for?
(repeat)

If it were up to me I would’ve never been born
Missing my mother’s womb, safe and warm
Early in the morn, I wanna shoot the alarm
‘Cause whatever’s waiting for me’s gonna do me more harm
You can call it negative, think what you will
But you won’t understand until your heart’s been killed
Heart’s been killed, heart’s been killed
Watching my own blood spill

Frustration’s my middle name
I feel I’m going insane
Frustration’s my middle name
I feel I’m going insane

Feeling in my heart I can’t take no more
Anybody know what I’m breathing for?
Feeling in my heart I can’t take no more
Anybody know what I’m breathing for?
(repeat)

Don’t mean to frighten my family and the people around
But the pressure is bone-crushing and it’s keeping me down
My pupils are dilated 24-7
‘Cause life’s been as dark as the back side of Heaven
I got a whole lot of terrifying worries and fears
That the Lone Ranger within won’t share with my peers
But if my eyes open in the morning, taking in the ceiling
For another thrill season
Say to myself I’m

Still breathing
Still breathing
Still breathing
I’m breathing

Still breathing
Still breathing
Still breathing
I’m breathing
